Under the weather and killing it

I have been taking Monday’s off for the past couple of months (except for Master’s Swim).  This is typical triathlete syndrome.  In the past an off day would be swim plus strength training.  I guess I have gotten smarter (just a little bit) and have made off days at least off for the legs.

Weekend riding, running, bowling and brewing

I skipped the group ride on Saturday morning.  I had another commitment early in the morning.  However, what I was able to do was hit the tarmac at 6AM and tackle the time trial course.  I have been riding the TT course at a high percentage of my maximum.  Ideally, I would like to do multiple repeats of this course.  I was successful this time.

I rode the course twice at about 90 percent of all out according to heart rate.  This just so happened to be 90 percent by time as well.  I rode the course twice with a 10 minute easy spin recovery between sessions.

2011 Dragonfly Race Report

We arrive at packet picket at 4PM the day before the race.  Walking down the beach to the water it was brutally hot.  The air was still and the sun was harsh.  I took my shoes off and stepped into the water.  I only got ankle deep.  The water was so hot that I did not want to get in any further!  I preferred the mid 90 degree air temperature over the lake water.  We had a good showing from Hattiesburg:  Sam, Chris, John, Judy, Shawn and a couple of others.  This being the Best of the US, same was shooting for top 3.

Aero bar swap

I have to be honest.  I was not ‘on’ the trainer watching cycling on Sunday.  I was working on the bike while watching cycling on Sunday.  I was just using the trainer as a bike stand.

A few months ago my left bar end shifter stopped working.  I was not sure if it was my front derailleur or if it was something else.  I did some investigating and found out it was the cable.  The cable housing under the bottom bracket was dirty and starting to corrode.  I replaced the cable and all was good with the world.

Where are the handlebars?

Breaking in the summer feet

Earlier in the week I ran half mile intervals.  I ran them at 6AM.  Although it was very hot and very humid my paces were right in line.  I gave myself some leeway but I was a bit faster.  There is a fine line between blowing up and hitting your marks.  Since I was only running 4 x 1/2 mile with 90 seconds rest I felt comfortable in pushing the pace.

The pool is heating up again

The lane dividers came in at the Payne Center.  That is a good thing.  They were a little short but they managed to attach them.  They really calmed the water.  I guess this is the end of open water swimming in the pool.

Dragonfly Race Prep - 2011

I got a call last week from some friends encouraging me to sign up for the Dragonfly Triathlon.  This race is up near Memphis and will be the Mississippi qualifier for the Best of the US Amateur Championship.  While I do not plan on placing first, second or third overall it will be an exciting race.  All of the top guns will be present since the Championship race will be in Alabama this year (Brett Robinson Alabama Coastal).

Weekend Warrior–is that a bad thing?

The brutal heat has subsided somewhat this past week.  The highs have not been in the triple digits.  In fact the highs have only been around 95 – 97.  Yes, this is still hot but the difference in 5 degrees is significant.

Recovery and more swimming

I have been away from the blog a bit this week. It is not that nothing has been going on. It took a couple of days to recover from the Heat Wave. I guess the intensity compounded with the heat took a lot out of me.

Race number excavation

So I mount my number on the bottom tube.  In fact, I generally just put the race number right on top of an existing race tube.  Some of my friends were giving me a hard time about the added weight of so many race numbers.  So in the hotel room the night before the Heat Wave I decided to some excavating.

How to mount your race number

You see the bike race numbers mounted in a number of ways.  In fact, I have seen them flapping around on very expensive, super aero bikes.  Even the PRO’s will have them stuck on any which way.

If your bike has a round seat tube you can fashion the race number to mimic a more aerodynamic airfoil shape.  However, my race bike already has an airfoil shape.

Here is how I like to mount my race number.

Take your race number and wrap it around the tube that you would like to display it on.  Trim the lower edge as necessary.

Heat Wave 2011–Race Report

Left work a little early on Friday to head up to Ridgeland for the Heat Wave.  It was hot.  Central and Southern Mississippi has been under a sever heat warning for the past week.  The temperatures have been hitting the triple digits and combined with humidity in the 90’s – well, it has been warm!

I got to talk to a couple of friends at Indian Cycle and Fitness during packet pickup.  They always do a great job.  There were finger foods, wine and beer.  I was on good behavior and stuck to the soft drinks.  I did eat a lot of cheese and crackers.

They had all of their super cool triathlon bikes on display with big mark downs.  It is always temping.  I got to see a Specialize Shiv up close and personal as well as a Speed Concept with electronic shifting.  Both of those bikes are out of my league.

Open water swimming in the pool

If you remember, there was a fire at the university pool about 2 months ago.  It took forever before it was ready to be re-opened.  I guess some of the stuff that went up in flames was hazardous (scuba equipment) and the clean required a special crew.

But, the pool reopened on Tuesday.  So with the open water swimming at this past memorial day’s Brick Nic and the swimming this week at the pool, I have had 4 swim sessions.

A heat wave for The Heat Wave

I always like to look over my past races to learn from my experiences.  This will be the fourth time that I have raced the Heat Wave.  Last year was rough and I have thought a lot about it.

I ran past him but before long I had to stop on the side of the trail. I was making those puking noises and starting to gag a little. I bent over and a stream of hot brown liquid ejected from my mouth. It was short and sweet. I jumped back on the trail as I apologized to the racers around me.

Racing shoe prep

I decided to do the Wool Market Duathlon the night before.  I had purchased a new pair of racing shoes last month but I had only worn them once.
